A fun-filled day out with our service users to Abbey Park

Abbey Pk 13We decided to make the most of a beautiful Summer day by taking our service users to the Education Centre in Abbey Park. This secure Centre is located in the heart of the park, overlooking beautiful flower gardens and only a few minutes’ walk from the Boating Lake.  The Centre is well-equipped with disabled toilets, kitchen, tables and chairs and includes other facilities too.

Abbey pk 24The day began with Service users being picked up from home at the usual time in the morning, and being dropped off at the Education centre, having toured the park in the car.  A hot breakfast of gathia and jalebi were served with tea or coffee, which was a special treat for our service users. After breakfast, our Managing Director talked a bit about the history of the park, giving service users an insight into the importance of the park and its surroundings; an asset to Leicester’s heritage. One of our service users said: “Learning about the history of the park was really interesting and enjoyable.

This short introduction to the park was followed by taking all our service users outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and open environment. Some people took a short walk around the flower garden, while others played games such as ball games

Abbey Pk 3Lunch arrived soon after the games, freshly prepared by our Chef, Deviben, served hot to our hungry and waiting service users. Kirti, one of our service users, said: “I really enjoyed the hot lunch, Deviben catered for everyone’s individual needs”.

Abbey pk (29)The day was made more memorable as we celebrated 2 people’s birthdays. Birthday celebrations are a norm at Santosh and we make all our service users feel special by getting a cake and singing birthday songs.

Once the birthdays’ were acknowledged, we took the service users down to the Boating lake to feed the birds, whilst enjoying the lovely view and relaxing atmosphere. The cake was served outside, allowing service users to spend more time outdoors, doing what they enjoy doing. Minaxi, our birthday girl said: “Thank you so much for the day out and celebrating my birthday. Balbir bhai was really happy and this made me happy too. It was really well catered for and we were all looked after really well.”

For some of our service users, this will be a day to remember; with birthday celebrations, taking a walk down memory lane, doing something they haven’t done for a long time. Mohan said: “I went to Abbey Park after 40 years and it really took me back in time. I used to take my children there, and seeing young couples there bought a tear to my eye.” A big thank you to all the staff who made the day possible and a special thanks to Abbey Park management team.
